GERMANIA ANNO 0

Title _ Germania anno 0
Period _ 2021
Location _ Berlin, Germany
Status _ Research, Investigation project

Since the fall of the Wall, the city of Berlin has been the subject of a worldwide theoretical-architectural debate. The model of 'critical reconstruction', which emerged victorious, has, however, imposed itself axiomatically, and its repetition on a large scale entails the risk of the urban complexity resulting from the troubled history of the German capital disappearing.

Therefore, the design investigation - which takes place in the exceptional setting of the Hertzallee Nord subdivision in the heart of Berlin's City West cultural, commercial and tourist centre - is inspired by alternative visions of the city imagined by Hans Stimmann.

In opposition to the diffuse building plans, the project gives ample space to green areas, one part of which is designed as an extension of the neighbouring Großer Tiergarten and the other accommodates the circus that has been established in the area for years. This result is achieved thanks to the concentration of volumes in a large platform-building, generated by the variations produced by a sequential system of baffles; it intends to propose itself as an "urban social condenser", in which the activities now consolidated in the area (linked to the university, the bus station and the tourist-recreational spaces) can dynamically coexist.

This result is achieved thanks to the concentration of volumes in a large platform-building, generated by the variations produced by a sequential system of baffles; it is intended to act as an "urban social condenser" in which the activities now consolidated in the area (linked to the university, the bus station and the tourist-recreational spaces) can dynamically coexist. The great horizontal development of the work is counterpointed by the verticality of a student-tower, which emerges from the platform itself thanks to the elevated continuation of some of the septa, and overlooks the roof of the building, a new raised ground and future aggregator of urban sociality.
